Modern Kintsugi Ceramic Repair with Emi Joyce

Kintsugi (金継ぎ, gold joinery) is the Japanese craft of repairing ceramics. Fractures are no longer weak points, but beautiful elements. This philosophy is often taught as embracing imperfections in our life, the beauty of human flaws.

During the 2.5-hour workshop, you will learn how to repair ceramics with the modern Kintsugi methods finishing the joints with gold powder. All materials and a broken ceramic dish is included in the workshop fee. You are also welcome to bring your own broken ceramics – the original piece should be small and broken into no more than 4 fragments. Items must be glazed. Decoration is recommended after all repairs have been made. Bring a cardboard box or something similar that will allow you to carry your items home without touching the repaired parts.

This class will be taught by Emi Joyce, formerly a full-time bench jeweler and apparel designer, currently a kintsugi restorer and a natural dyer. Check out her IG for her kintsugi works, @modernkintsugirepairpdx.
